Living the Questions
Faith is not a destination, but a journey. People know that at its core, Christianity has something good to offer the human race. At the same time, many have a sense that they are alone in being a 'thinking' Christian' and that 'salvaging' Christianity is a hopeless task.
What many have longed for is a safe environment where they have permission to ask the questions they've always wanted to ask but have been afraid to voice for fear of being thought a heretic.
'Living the Questions' provides a context where people can be liberated from stagnant cliches and pursue their questions and seek to inform their understanding as part of a life-long spiritual journey. Through exposure to provocative theological and spiritual insights and the engagement of small group conversation, participants in LTQ have experienced how profoundly important the journey itself is. LTQ is an open-minded alternative to studies that attempt to give participants all the answers and instead strives to create an environment where participants can interact with one another in exploring what's next for Christianity.
Following the success of our term time Sunday evening dinner and discussion series last year, we will be exploring another Living the Questions resource – First Light: Jesus and the Kingdom of God. First Light presents the culmination of John Dominic Crossan’s thinking of half a century about Jesus and includes reflections by Marcus Borg. There will be four sessions each term:
- 29 April 2012 The Lake as the World
- 13 May 2012 Parables as lures
- 27 May 2012 Jesus as Lord
- 10 June 2012 Substitutionary Atonement?
- (date tbc) Demonstrations in Jerusalem
- (date tbc) The Crowd & the Crucifixion
- (date tbc) Resurrection as Resistance
- (date tbc) America as the New Rome
Aphinya Thaler will again be cooking a lovely dinner for us. Dinner is at 7pm; the DVD and discussion begins at 7:45pm. We end by 9pm. Reserve your place and receive the First Light Reader by contacting Sue Pearce, administrator@saintcolumbas.org (07880 601 109).
